Most similar games only feature melee items such as lead pipes and knives. These are dropped by enemies or found in barrels, and can be picked up by the player to be used against foes. What really sets Cadillacs and Dinosaurs apart from the crowd however are the weapons. This wasn’t an original feature (the arcade game Growl did this years earlier with wild animals) but there’s a strong emphasis on it here. They start out green when docile but turn red when agitated and attack both players and enemies. That’s pretty wild for 1993! Additionally there are dinosaurs in most stages that function as environmental hazards. The first and most significant feature is that this game allows for three players simultaneously. There are a lot of elements that set this one apart from the crowd. Lose both lives and you must insert another coin. When your life bar runs out you lose your one additional life (more are gained as you reach milestones for points) and are thrown right back into the mix. You move your character in all eight directions and defeat enemies by generally using punches and kicks. You’re given your choice if four playable characters with the typical strong/slow and weak/fast set up we’re all accustomed to by now. This game at first appears to be a pretty typical beat em up. Final Fight and Streets of Rage are irreplaceable, and this one doesn’t push them into the shadows – it just gently nudges them into sharing the beat-‘em-up spotlight. It’s a shame – what’s offered here is some of the genre’s finest action, with swarms of enemies, hilarious and hideous boss encounters, and a ton of weaponry at your disposal. It is amazing to me that Cadillacs and Dinosaurs never reached the popularity of the other Capcom beat-em-‘ups – the lack of Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis ports probably played a role in its relative obscurity. When you’re handed a BAZOOKA when you run out of lives and have to continue, it makes the occasional lead pipe offered by other brawlers seem a little vanilla. You can grab a grenade and throw it at a pack of ruffians - if it hits one of ‘em head-on, the guy will EXPLODE INTO BLOODY GUT CHUNKS. There’s nothing like finding a shotgun or an uzi in a barrel and plugging HAMMER T. An awesome thing about this game is the weapons, especially the availability of guns. Gone are the Dugs and Andores of Final Fight - say hello to Ferris, Gneiss, Razor, and the token obese bull-charge guys, Hammer T. Futa Fix Dick Dine and DashĬ&D is similarly over-the-top in every other aspect. It just needs to be understood that this is the type of thing that makes beat-‘em-ups endearing.

You even find point value items like baseball mitts. There are lots of guns, and recovery items are food like pizza and hot dogs. What I found hilarious is the fact that they really tried to Americanize everything. In that sense Cadillacs and Dinosaurs certainly feels like an early 90s Japanese game. It’s a pretty goofy scenario, and all of the plot twists are crazy. The group punches and kicks their way through eight stages (each contains several acts within) to stop the black marketing gang from profiting off of the dinos. Dinosaurs run rampant in this time period, and an evil gang has been poaching them. You play as one member (of your choosing) of four from a ragtag group of friends in the twenty sixth century. The story is a little convoluted to be honest. Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it the property was and still is awfully obscure.
